Why is wall tie replacement required?
There are two reasons why a building may need to have its wall ties replaced:
- Wall tie failure
Failure of cavity wall ties occurs when chemical reactions between metal and moisture, in the presence of oxygen, causes corrosion. This results in a build-up of brittle iron oxide layers which weaken and erode the steel tie-irons.
- Defective design or construction
Instances where the built-in brick tie system has been incorrectly fitted, for example where ties have inadequate embedment depth or where an inadequate number of ties have been incorporated.
In both cases installation of a remedial wall tie replacement system will ensure that the outer wall is firmly secured to the buildings main structure, maintaining stability and allowing applied loads to be transferred and shared.
